Two 16-year-olds were killed Monday night in a collision between a semi-truck and a car near Loop 303 and Olive Avenue, authorities said.
DPS said the two teens in the car died at the scene. Their names and hometowns weren't immediately available.
The crash occurred at about 7 p.m. Monday close to a railroad crossing near Loop 303 and Olive Avenue, Department of state Public Safety officials said Loop 303 was closed completely as officials investigated the crash. It was expected to be closed for several hours.
The impact was so intense that investigators had to use the car's VIN to determine its make a model.
The driver of the semi-truck survived and was flown to a Phoenix hospital in serious condition. His name wasn't released.
DPS said the cause of the crash is under investigation. Late Monday, crews were on their way to unload the semi, which was carrying grocery items for Basha's.
