78% of pedestrian deaths and injuries occur in crosswalks. What???
The National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) reports that each year nearly 5,000 pedestrians die in motor vehicle related accidents, and approximately 76,000 pedestrians in 2012 suffered injuries when hit by a car or truck.
“Use the crosswalk”, we tell our children. But a crosswalk is not a force-field. It is supposed to be a zone of safety, but no one can ignore the traffic on the road.
Remember: In car vs. pedestrian, the pedestrian ALWAYS loses!
Pedestrians must exercise reasonable care when crossing a street. Use the crosswalk, and always watch out for traffic. Drivers must exercise reasonable care when on the roadways, and always pay attention for pedestrians in the area. Failure to do so, by either of the above, is considered negligence.
A few of the most common factors contributing to pedestrian negligence are:
Not using the crosswalk;
Crossing against the light; and
Not paying attention to traffic on the roadway.
A few of the most common factors contributing to driver negligence are:
Distracted driving;
Speeding;
Failing to yield the right of way to pedestrians at crosswalks;
Disobeying traffic signs or signals;
Failing to signal while turning;
Disregarding weather or traffic conditions; and
Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
EVERYONE must use caution in, around and while on the streets. Pedestrian accidents can be prevented. Please everyone, be careful out there.
